The Philippines has just been included as one of the New Gastronomic 8 (G-8) emerging markets of influence in world cuisine by the Hongkong-based marketing and communications agency, Catch On, in their new report entitled The Future of Food. The report states that there is a new food order with an appetite for cuisine that defies conventional classification, and where dishes are inflected by mismatched ingredients or prepared in ways that question traditional techniques. The report further states that cross border migrations and population melting-pots have produced a generation of “third culture chefs” that innovate their culinary traditions and are mixing ingredients and techniques in unimaginable ways. This is where the Philippines has come in as a member of the New G-8 countries. Food is an important part of Philippine culture and Filipinos take their culture of food seriously. The cross-pollination of culinary influences in Philippine cuisine mirrors the country’s colourful historical influences and these influences are amplified and interpreted gastronomically for the world by a young breed of bold and tech-savvy Filipino chefs. As more Filipinos travel overseas, they bring with them their culture of food. Philippine ingredients and the country’s signature dishes like adobo, kinilaw, and sisig are slowly making their way into international kitchens. “Overseas, the Philippines’ colorful influence can be found in restaurants like Jeepney and Pig & Khao in New York, or Filipino-born, Austin-based Paul Qui’s eponymous restaurant,” according to The Future of Food report. <script async="" src="//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js"></script>

We’re seeing more self-trained chefs launching restaurants, more men cooking at home, the continued move away from any notion of fine dining, the growing influence of street food, and the popularity of culinary tourism. This is the new culture of food,” the report adds. Aside from the Philippines, other countries included in the New G-8 are China, Iran, Israel, Korea, Mexico, Peru, and Vietnam. “We are most pleased to announce that as a result of the recently-concluded global culinary events here such as Madrid Fusion Manila and World Street Food Congress, the Philippines is now gaining more recognition as an emerging country, whose indigenous ingredients and culinary excellence are increasingly finding their way into world cuisine. The fact that the organizers of the prestigious Madrid Fusion decided to hold the first and only Asian edition in the Philippines signalled to the rest of the world the growing influence and importance of Philippine cuisine and the Filipino talent. As more travellers are starting to choose their travel destinations and plan their itineraries based on the food culture of a place, this is definitely an added boost to Philippine tourism,” Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez, Jr. enthused.

There's more than meets the eye with Filipina nurse, Cielito Seguritan.  With her petite frame, no one would even assume that this lady is a martial artist.  Not only is she into the martial arts, she is also a writer and educator. 
 
Put that together and voila!  You have a writer of a book on the Grand Master of Kali-Eskrima-Arnis, Percival Pableo. 
 
Cielito has always wanted to be a journalist.  However, she became a nurse and then realized that nursing expands to so many areas.  Thus, continuous studies brought her to document and publish other discoveries in medicine.

Currently, Cielito Seguritan Caneja is a Respiratory Clinical Nurse Specialist at Chelsea Westminster Hospital London United Kingdom.  Her job is also combined as a Clinical Researcher specialising in Asthma, COPD, Medical Service Development and Interventional Bronchoscopy. She is also an Educator for Medical Students in the Imperial College London and is a speaker/ faculty for numerous Interventional Respiratory Bronchocopy Courses in London United Kingdom and travels extensively in Europe to lecture and teach. 
 
Not content with resting on her Bachelors Degree in Nursing from Philippines, she continued on to receive a Masters Degree in Nursing, Clinical Education in Thames Valley University London UK and Independent Nurse Practise in Kings College University of London UK.  Having completed multiple multi-national researches which are considered world class by FDA and MHRA regulations and standards, Cielito also pursues her passion in Clinical Research and lately focusing on the Law and Ethics of Medical practice. She continues on her PhD in Respiratory studies and had published multiple clinical publications. 
 
Her motivation to continue doing clinical research is to see the great change in the quality of life of her patients.  “To see them smile and come back on their follow up hospital visit feeling better”

On her being a martial artist, our Cielito is an Eskrima World Champion and British National Champion, propagating and promoting Filipino Martial Arts.  The book she authored on Kali-Eskrima-Arnis, is now a resource within various libraries such as Bodleaian Library at Oxford University, The National Library of Scotland, The National Library of Wales and Trinity College Dublin. 
 
With all that has been in her journey, Cielito looks back in her humble beginning from a family of farmers in Bambang, Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines.  As any normal Filipino who brims with nostalgia, Cielo always looks forward to go back home in the panoramic farms at the Cordillera Mountains.

This past year of 2015 sparked a renewed interest in the study of Philippine National Heroes.  Thanks to the movie Heneral Luna, people became aware of the fiery general's exploits and eventual demise.  Yet, behind the adventures in the battlefield, there were others who waged war using pen instead of pistol. Graciano López Jaena (December 18, 1856 – January 20, 1896) was a journalist, orator, revolutionary, and national hero from Iloilo, the Philippines, who is well known for his newspaper, La Solidaridad. 
 
Philippine historians regard López Jaena, along with Marcelo H. del Pilar and José Rizal, as the triumvirate of Filipino propagandists. Of these three ilustrados, López Jaena was the first to arrive in Spain and may have begun the Propaganda Movement, which was a movement based in Spain that advocated the reform of the then-Spanish colony of the Philippines and which eventually led to the armed Philippine Revolution that begun in Manila in 1896. The Propaganda Movement was a key step towards a Philippine national identity. 
 
His parents sent López Jaena to Jaro to study at St. Vincent Ferrer Seminary which had been opened under the administration of Governor General Carlos María de la Torre y Nava Cerrada. While there, he served as a secretary to an uncle, Claudio López, who was the honorary vice consul of Portugal in Iloilo. His ambition to become a physician convinced his parents that this was the better course of action. 
 
López Jaena sought enrollment at the University of Santo Tomas but was denied admission because the required Bachelor of Arts degree was not offered at the seminary in Jaro. Instead he was appointed to the San Juan de Dios Hospital as an apprentice. Unfortunately, due to financial problems, he dropped out and returned to Iloilo to practice medicine. 
 
During this period, his visits with the poor began to stir feelings about the injustices that were common. At the age of 18 he wrote the satirical story "Fray Botod" which depicted a fat and lecherous priest. Botod’s false piety "always had the Virgin and God on his lips no matter how unjust and underhanded his acts are." This incurred the fury of the friars. Although the story was not published, a copy circulated in Iloilo but the friars could not prove that López Jaena was the author. 
 
He got into trouble for refusing to testify that certain prisoners died of natural causes when it was obvious that they had died at the hands of the mayor of Pototan. López Jaena continued to agitate for justice and finally went to Spain when threats were made on his life. López Jaena sailed for Spain in 1879. There he became a leading writer and speaker for Philippine reform.

López Jaena pursued his medical studies at the University of Valencia but did not finish. Once Rizal reproached Lopéz Jaena for not finishing his medical studies. Graciano replied, "On the shoulders of slaves should not rest a doctor's cape." Rizal countermanded, "The shoulders do not honor the doctor's cape, but the doctor's cape honors the shoulders." 
 
He then moved to the field of journalism. Losing interest in politics and academic life, he soon enjoyed his life in Barcelona and Madrid. However, his friends forgave him these indiscretions due to his talent with words. Mariano Ponce who was another of the Filipino propagandists in Spain observed, "... a deafening ovation followed the close of the peroration, the ladies waved their kerchiefs wildly, and the men applauded frantically as they stood up from their seats in order to embrace the speaker." Rizal noted, "His great love is politics and literature. I do not know for sure whether he loves politics in order to deliver speeches or he loves literature to be a politician." 
 
In addition he is remembered for his literary contributions to the propaganda movement. López Jaena founded the fortnightly newspaper, La Solidaridad. When the publication office moved from Barcelona to Madrid, the editorship was succeeded to Marcelo H. del Pilar. His talent can be seen in the publication Discursos y Artículos Varios (Speeches and Various Articles). 
 
López Jaena died of tuberculosis on January 20, 1896, eleven months short of his 40th birthday. The following day he was buried in an unmarked grave at the Cementerio del Sub-Oeste of Barcelona. He died in poverty. 
 
His death was followed by Marcelo H. del Pilar's on July 4 and on December 30 by José Rizal's by firing squad, thus ending the great triumvirate of propagandists. His remains have not been brought back to the Philippines.

Master Artist Federico Aguilar Alcuaz will finally be conferred the National Artist Award on Thursday, April 14, 2016.  President Aquino will formally elevate nine people to the Order of the National Artists (ONA) in the largest conferment ceremonies yet since the awards started in 1972. Alcuaz was conferred the title of National Artist for Visual Arts, Painting, Sculpture and Mixed Media in 2009. However, four nominees for the award other than Alcuaz became embroiled in the 2009 National Artist of the Philippines Controversy, which led the Supreme Court of the Philippines to temporarily issue a status quo order on August 25, 2009, blocking the conferment of the awards on all seven nominees - despite the fact that no objections were ever raised regarding the conferment of the award to Alcuaz and two other nominees. Federico Aguilar Alcuaz (1932-2011) was one of the foremost Filipino modernist visual artists who excelled in virtually all genres—landscape, portrait, still life and abstract—and mediums—oil, acrylic, mixed media, even tapestry. Alcuaz was born on June 6, 1932 in Santa Cruz, Manila. He was the 6th of 11 Children of Mariano Aguilar a Lawyer and a Musician and Encarnacion Alcuaz. He finished early schooling at the Dr. Albert Elementary School and San Beda High School. He studied law at the Ateneo de Manila and finished his degree in 1955. In 1949–1950 he took up painting subjects at the University of the Philippines (UP) School of Fine Arts. In 1955 he went to Madrid with a scholarship at the Academia de San Fernando which he got through the help of the Jesuits from the Ateneo de Manila. In 1956 he chose Barcelona as his career base.He also became a member of the La Punalada Group which counted among its members Tàpies, Cuixart and Tharrats. In the same year he began signing his paintings with Aguilar Alcuaz to distinguish himself from two other Aguilars who are also members of the La Punalada Group. In 1959, he met Ute Schmitz, a woman from Hamburg, Germany, whom he married 3 years later and they had 3 sons: Christian, Andreas and Matthias. A bon vivant and well-traveled, Aguilar maintained studios in Barcelona, Paris and Manila and exhibited extensively internationally and whose work earned him recognition both in the Philippines and abroad.

LONDON, England - There are only a handful of Filipino Dentists in the United Kingdom who have graduated and partly practiced their dentistry in the Philippines but are now included in the British Dentist Register.  In the past, dentists who studied overseas and hoped to practice had to take the International Qualifying Examination (IQE).  All that has been changed into the ORE (overseas registration examination). One of the few Filipinos who managed to pass the ORE in the UK and make it to the British Dentist Register is Marilou Villaver-Denosta, DMD.  Marilou is originally from Cebu and prior to her moving to the UK, practiced as a dentist for almost 4 years. Right after passing the board exam way 2001, Marilou volunteered as a community dentist in Mandaue City Health Department. Afterwards she joined Macrohon Orthodontic Centre for 2 years, and then moved to the Bernal Dental Clinic where she became the principal dentist.  Simultaneously she was also asked to become a Reliever Dentist for PAGCOR Mactan located in the Waterfront Hotel Mactan.

 When she moved to the UK, she wasn't able to practice her dentistry immediately and could only do associate jobs in the Philippines during her vacations. After a long wait, she said she finally had the guts and money to take the exam to allow her to practice dentistry in the UK. She recently passed it last September 2015 and was registered two months later. She is currently looking for a Dental Foundation Training Post for her to work in the NHS. Dr. Denosta says that basic dental education in the Philippines is on a par with other dental professionals abroad.  At the moment while waiting for her training post, she keeps herself busy revising for the MJDF (Member of the Joint Dental Fellowship) run by the Royal College of Surgeons in England. She envisions that once she has successfully finish my vocational training, she plans to pursue a specialization in Cosmetic Dentistry and open her own Dental Surgery. In her free time I do online revision courses to other ORE candidates so they too can pass the exam (these are candidates of different nationalities). Marilou says, "It's about time that community of Filipino dentists should be acknowledged the Philippines is amongst one of the best producers of dentists in the world and most of those who find themselves abroad are just settled doing assistant/dental nurse jobs thinking that these qualifying exams are so impossible to pass. Actually, it is very doable!".  Dr. Denosta continues, "I wasn't a practicing dentist for 10 years but I took the exam with no formal course in manikin (phantom head) and I passed it!" She says there are a lot of Indian, Pakistani, Nepali dentists who pass because they help one another.  On the other hand, Filipinos hardly know any other Filipino dentists taking the exam until the exam day itself when they see each other at the testing site. In the entire northwest of England Dr. Denosta seems to be the only Filipino dentist allowed to practice  She adds, "Imagine how many Filipinos are here who have a dental degree but would rather work as in other medical disciplines just to get by.  However, I am sure that they would rather work as a dentist if given the chance and encouragement.  I hope my story inspires other dentists to take the exam too so that there would be more Filipino dentists practicing in the United Kingdom".

Back in the early 1990s, I set up a 
boutique ad agency in Bacolod to service the needs of local clients who 
wanted to take their marketing efforts to a level much higher than the usual tombstone ads they would find in Bacolod's leading daily, The Visayan Daily Star.  Some
 of the work emanating from that agency is still alive and well today 
and is in fact is part of Bacolod's brand icons.  We're talking about 
the logo, menu, and place mat of Bob's Restaurant. One of the 
most interesting work we did in that boutique agency with my college 
buddy, Julie May Calderon, had to do with the Lopez Sugar Corporation.  
There was a window for a marketing advantage seen by Lopez Sugar 
Executive Vice President, Eusebio "Butch" Lopez, given the furor that 
was rattling the sugar industry in Negros at that time. The talk 
of the day was about the "Sugar-less Quedans" in some mills.  For those 
who are not familiar with the system in sugar farming, the Quedan is 
the warehouse receipt that functions as the sugar industry's most 
important negotiable instrument.  And because it is a negotiable 
instrument which represents physical sugar stored in a mill, the Quedan 
can change owners several times through trading before the physical 
stocks are withdrawn.  Under the Warehouse Receipt Law, a mill assumes 
sole responsibility for the protection of the sugar stocks represented 
by the piece of paper known as the Quedan.   
 Our small agency came up with a 
campaign which basically presented two versions in print media.  The 
first graphic we used was that of a baby.  The proposition was that if a
 planter milled with Lopez, he or she could sleep like a baby, knowing 
fully well that their Quedans were at all times backed up with physical 
sugar in the mill.  We knew that as the "Sleep Like A Baby" version. The
 next wave of the campaign showed an actual photo of a planter smiling. 
 For that layout, we showed Benjie Gonzaga standing in his garden giving
 his own version of a contented smile.  The headline was simple, "This 
Planter has Peace of Mind".  The rationale behind the contented smile 
and the headline was explained in the copy.  I waxed nostalgic 
today remembering a fun time of running a creative advertising operation
 in a land which mainly thrived on agriculture and where appreciation 
for the creativity was scarce.  I look back to that time and am very 
thankful to Butch Lopez whose genius in marketing allowed us the space 
to create a campaign so unique.  After all, when was the last time you 
have heard of a sugar mill advertising? I write these today 
because yesterday, I read the news that about P47-million worth of sugar
 stock inside a warehouse at the Batangas Sugar Central in Balayan town 
is missing. The sugar central is a repository of the Sugar 
Regulatory Administration (SRA) of all sugar stocks harvested in 
Southern Luzon.  And again, under the law, all sugar stocks are to be 
turned over to the SRA, which deposits them in the warehouses of sugar 
centrals, before these are released to their dealers. Another case of "Sugar-less Quedan" only this time outside Negros. True enough, the unique selling proposition of a mill is not just its efficiency but its integrity.
