Euro Pinoys Part 2

By: Dr. Michael Tan

When one of my graduate students (now a colleague in the faculty) had to attend a conference in Tarragona, Spain, two years ago, she found herself in a bind: Her relatives, who were living in Madrid and Barcelona in Spain and in Rome, Italy, all insisted that she visit them.

In last Wednesday’s column I cited statistics from the Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) reporting that there were some 866,000 Filipinos living in Europe, half of them permanently. Spain ranks only fifth in the number of Filipino residents, surpassed by Italy, the United Kingdom, Greece, France and Germany.

Some of these Filipinos have lived in Europe for many years, with children and even grandchildren and, as my opening report shows, often involve entire clans, if not barangays, who follow the footsteps of an initial pioneer.

The migrants are in various professions, sometimes marked by changing demand across time. The fairly large population in Germany goes back to the 1970s when Filipino nurses were in great demand, with another ongoing exodus of nurses and midwives to the United Kingdom.

I’ve wondered about our Euro Pinoys leaving an imprint in their host countries. Has the Filipino sweet tooth convinced some Europeans to go for sweet wines or sweet spaghetti sauce, for example? If we hear occasionally of Filipino-Americans doing well in competitions like “American Idol,” I’ve also heard of Euro Pinoys making it into similar European competitions.

‘Balik Euro Pinoys’

In recent years we’ve been seeing a growing number of “balik Euro Pinoys,” mostly older ones who have come home to retire, living comfortably off their pensions, which are relatively high because of Europe’s social welfare systems.

Perhaps on a smaller scale, we’re also seeing younger Euro Pinoys coming home, usually children of intermarriages who cash in on their Eurasian features to model, or enter the movies. Then there are the Azkals, the football team, the members of which are the result of growing up in countries that appreciate football (soccer) more than the Americans.

I wonder what they bring home in terms of expectations shaped from their life in Europe. Do they imbibe the liberal social attitudes of western Europe toward sex and sexuality, for example? Do they get exasperated, having benefited from the generous national health services of Europe, in contrast to our own which is left pretty much to free market forces—that is, pay out of your own pocket?

I wonder, too, if the Euro Pinoys are watching how Europe is dealing with tribalism and regionalism. When European friends, usually academics, cite our regional loyalties—national elections are still marked by the “Ilokano vote,” “Bisaya vote,” or “Bikol vote,” for example—as a cause of underdevelopment, I remind them that Europeans have been even more “tribal” than we are: nations emerging within nations, rising, sometimes expanding aggressively and through warfare, only to disintegrate.

It’s not just in Eastern Europe that it’s sometimes hard to keep track of countries; it also happens in Western Europe, where there are threats of secession—the Scots in the United Kingdom, or the Catalonians and the Basques in Spain. The Italians, although on the surface united with one language, are still marked by a strong regionalism that goes back to the Middle Ages when Italy did not exist and instead there were city-states, maritime republics and papal states. It was not until the 19th century that one Italian nation-state emerged.

Not surprisingly, ultranationalist ideologies have taken off from the tribalism, and thrived. These ideologies have led to so many conflicts, including the two world wars. The European Union was in fact a response to these ideologies, an attempt to bring the “tribes” together, finding common cause in that vague concept called democracy. I often hear political scientists saying that Asean (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) will have difficulty surviving because its members are so different from one another. But the European Union brings together even more diverse cultures.

Insularity

The United Kingdom’s decision to exit the European Union should not be surprising either. While it was able to bring together England, Scotland, Wales and part of Ireland, its unity has been tense, Scotland being the most restless in recent years. Look at the map and you will see how geography may have shaped its national mindset. Great Britain is one huge island about double the size of Luzon, and the entire United Kingdom looks so isolated from continental Europe. Geography does contribute to insularity.

And insularity includes a fear of outsiders. Brexit (Britain Exit) was a reaction to the European Union’s policies on the free movement of Europeans, with UK citizens convinced that they were being too generous with other Europeans—for example, Polish workers. There’s irony here because it has been relatively easy to become a UK citizen (or subject, given it is still a monarchy), so the faces of the British aren’t quite white anymore. Who would have thought, 50 years ago, that there would be a mayor of London described as coming from a “British Pakistani” family? Might we see, in the not too distant future, references to “British Filipinos”? There are a growing number of Filipinos who carry UK passports, including some through same-sex civil unions and marriage.

My point is that the political systems and governance of European countries, so different from our own copied from Mother America, just might capture the imagination of Euro Pinoys who, if they return to the Philippines, might want to introduce innovations based on European models, whether in more equitable healthcare coverage, or even more radical changes. Italy’s Parliament, for example, includes seats reserved for Italian citizens living overseas.

Those, of course, are macro changes. I think change is happening on the individual level: Euro Pinoys come home with new tastes in food and architecture (with real estate companies trying to cash in, offering subdivisions with an Italian touch). Some aspects of culture are more quick to pick up than others: I don’t know if Filipino-Italians have acquired a taste for classical music and opera, for example. (I was at an affair at UP Diliman last night showcasing our athletes and dance groups, and one presentation—ballet—drew audibly mixed reactions.)

I also wonder what happens to Filipinos who study in Europe for a few years and come home. Many are in government service, charting policies and implementing important projects. Does their stay in Europe give them new insights? Or, even more radically, a different way of looking at issues and problems?

Marco Polo: An Untold Story heralds the arrival in August 2016 of the first major British-Philippine musical theatre production on the London stage. With words and music composed in their entirety by Roger Saldo Chua, the noted Filipino-Belgian singer-actor, the production has evolved and gained momentum since it was first unveiled to a small audience in New York. Chua’s sentimental attachment to a reimagined episode in the life of the legendary 13th century Venetian explorer has grown into a full-blown lyrique musicale; international preview performances in Manila and Paris during the past year have been warmly received. In London, the show is scheduled to run from 5th August to 4th September 2016 at the Shaw Theatre.

An East-West romance in the purest sense, Marco Polo: An Untold Story is a tale of heroism in the service of true love, one with timeless, cross-cultural and intergenerational appeal. The international cast, hand-picked by Chua comprises some of the finest musical talents working in the theatre today. The show is well paced and compelling, with a beautiful, memorable score.
The Philippines has just been included as one of the New Gastronomic 8 (G-8) emerging markets of influence in world cuisine by the Hongkong-based marketing and communications agency, Catch On, in their new report entitled The Future of Food.

The report states that there is a new food order with an appetite for cuisine that defies conventional classification, and where dishes are inflected by mismatched ingredients or prepared in ways that question traditional techniques. The report further states that cross border migrations and population melting-pots have produced a generation of “third culture chefs” that innovate their culinary traditions and are mixing ingredients and techniques in unimaginable ways.

This is where the Philippines has come in as a member of the New G-8 countries. Food is an important part of Philippine culture and Filipinos take their culture of food seriously. The cross-pollination of culinary influences in Philippine cuisine mirrors the country’s colourful historical influences and these influences are amplified and interpreted gastronomically for the world by a young breed of bold and tech-savvy Filipino chefs. As more Filipinos travel overseas, they bring with them their culture of food. Philippine ingredients and the country’s signature dishes like adobo, kinilaw, and sisig are slowly making their way into international kitchens.

“Overseas, the Philippines’ colorful influence can be found in restaurants like Jeepney and Pig & Khao in New York, or Filipino-born, Austin-based Paul Qui’s eponymous restaurant,” according to The Future of Food report.

“There’s a growing movement to preserve and document culinary artisanal traditions that have survived generations simply because they came out of family kitchens. We’re seeing more self-trained chefs launching restaurants, more men cooking at home, the continued move away from any notion of fine dining, the growing influence of street food, and the popularity of culinary tourism. This is the new culture of food,” the report adds.

Aside from the Philippines, other countries included in the New G-8 are China, Iran, Israel, Korea, Mexico, Peru, and Vietnam.

“We are most pleased to announce that as a result of the recently-concluded global culinary events here such as Madrid Fusion Manila and World Street Food Congress, the Philippines is now gaining more recognition as an emerging country, whose indigenous ingredients and culinary excellence are increasingly finding their way into world cuisine. The fact that the organizers of the prestigious Madrid Fusion decided to hold the first and only Asian edition in the Philippines signalled to the rest of the world the growing influence and importance of Philippine cuisine and the Filipino talent. As more travellers are starting to choose their travel destinations and plan their itineraries based on the food culture of a place, this is definitely an added boost to Philippine tourism,” Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez, Jr. enthused.
Master Artist Federico Aguilar Alcuaz will finally be conferred the National Artist Award on Thursday, April 14, 2016. President Aquino will formally elevate nine people to the Order of the National Artists (ONA) in the largest conferment ceremonies yet since the awards started in 1972.

Alcuaz was conferred the title of National Artist for Visual Arts, Painting, Sculpture and Mixed Media in 2009. However, four nominees for the award other than Alcuaz became embroiled in the 2009 National Artist of the Philippines Controversy, which led the Supreme Court of the Philippines to temporarily issue a status quo order on August 25, 2009, blocking the conferment of the awards on all seven nominees - despite the fact that no objections were ever raised regarding the conferment of the award to Alcuaz and two other nominees.

Federico Aguilar Alcuaz (1932-2011) was one of the foremost Filipino modernist visual artists who excelled in virtually all genres—landscape, portrait, still life and abstract—and mediums—oil, acrylic, mixed media, even tapestry.

Alcuaz was born on June 6, 1932 in Santa Cruz, Manila. He was the 6th of 11 Children of Mariano Aguilar a Lawyer and a Musician and Encarnacion Alcuaz. He finished early schooling at the Dr. Albert Elementary School and San Beda High School. He studied law at the Ateneo de Manila and finished his degree in 1955. In 1949–1950 he took up painting subjects at the University of the Philippines (UP) School of Fine Arts. In 1955 he went to Madrid with a scholarship at the Academia de San Fernando which he got through the help of the Jesuits from the Ateneo de Manila. In 1956 he chose Barcelona as his career base.He also became a member of the La Punalada Group which counted among its members Tàpies, Cuixart and Tharrats. In the same year he began signing his paintings with Aguilar Alcuaz to distinguish himself from two other Aguilars who are also members of the La Punalada Group. In 1959, he met Ute Schmitz, a woman from Hamburg, Germany, whom he married 3 years later and they had 3 sons: Christian, Andreas and Matthias.

A bon vivant and well-traveled, Aguilar maintained studios in Barcelona, Paris and Manila and exhibited extensively internationally and whose work earned him recognition both in the Philippines and abroad.

Medix Founder, Marc Medina (R) and Co-Founder, Lloyd Tronco
(L) are reshaping how young dentists will keep records in the future.

MANILA, Philippines - The dental profession is one which is clearly shaped by the dentists themselves. Seldom does it happen when non-dental practitioners contribute to the path of the future of dental practice.

In this day and age of business disruption though, two non-dental practitioners are helping shape the future of clinic management for dentists with an online platform which helps dental professionals manage their records.

For the longest time, dentists have been keeping records on a 3x5 inch index card with chartings of fillings and actual tooth condition. All of that is set to change in the next few years as an app called Medix slowly but steadily gains ground among Filipino dentists.

Medix ( www.medix.ph ) is an online platform for dentists to keep their records and simplify their management through the use of digital technology. Medix CEO, Marc Medina, is a Computer Science graduate whose family background involved selling dentist chairs. His Co-Founder in this technology startup, Lloyd Tronco, is a seasoned advertising professional whose credentials include being part of multinational ad agencies like McCann-Erickson. Together, the two non-dentists have drawn on their own fields of expertise to propel Medix to be part of the standard tools of the trade in a dentist's clinic.

"It's not an easy climb, this path to getting Medix accepted among current dentists", says Medina. "Perhaps the greatest hindrance would be the clinic secretary, and the fact that some dentists still need to adapt to technology. But we've seen interest. Interest is high, all we need to push for is adaptability".

From the end of Tronco, who serves as Marketing Director, he says, "It's just a matter of time. We're patient (no pun intended). The dental students who are currently in dental colleges are our hope. They are the ones who no longer need to adapt to smartphones and tablets. As we speak, they are glued to those devices". He adds, "When the time comes for them to start their practice, these young dentists will hardly resort to the 3x5 card. They'll immediately go digital via Medix".

True enough, as more dentists are glued to their iPads, iPhones, Androids and tablets, there is no other way for dental practitioners to go but use a digital platform like Medix to not only keep records but also create appointments and manage the entire clinic.

(for more inquiries on Medix, a message may be sent to dennis.medix@gmail.com or dexter.medix@gmail.com ; you can also text 0915-99-MEDIX ).

(for more inquiries on Medix, a message may be sent via http://www.facebook.com/medixph or email medixph.dae@gmail.com ).
— by Gene Alcantara

There is a bit of London that will forever be Philippine. It is a house on 37 Chalcot Crescent NW1, on Primrose Hill, just off Regents Park, owned many many years ago by the Beckett family. One can approach it from two tube stations, southward from Chalk Farm or westward from Camden Town. If one happens to be visiting the London Zoological Gardens, it will just be about 10 minutes walk across the road in a northerly direction.

The three-storey, white painted house with spear-like metal fencing in black, is easy to spot in the rows of identical terrace houses on the crescent. For it is the only one with a blue circular plaque to the left of the black front door saying that Dr Jose Rizal, Filipino hero, lived there in 1888-1889. The way though that the house has become for all intents and purposes a pilgrimage site for Filipinos visiting the British isles, one would think Rizal lived there for a long long time.

I suppose he did not have to live there for very long. For whatever period of time he spent in that house had been absolutely productive for both the birth of the Philippine Republic, and the pride of Filipinos nowadays not just as a nation of heroes, but as one with a rich cultural heritage. The house was of course Rizal’s base when he came to England for scholarly pursuits. It is important because under its roof he undoubtedly contemplated the state of his country and what he was going to do to bring about a better future.

While he was a boarder in the house, Rizal worked on three major literary undertakings–his annotations of Antonio de Morga’s Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas, his philological studies with a view to producing a Philippine dictionary and grammar book, and most importantly his sequel to Noli Me Tangere. During this time he was prolific in political writing as well as correspondence with family and friends. Rizal was supposed to have done some sculptures during this period too although I have never set eyes on any of them at all.

Chalcot Crescent is located fairly centrally and is a stone’s throw away from the residence on Elsworthy Terrace of his good friend, Dr Reinhold Rost, librarian of the India Office Library and who gave him access to Morga’s book. Across the park, the British Library would probably have been a good hour’s walk away. The major sites of attraction of London would have been also mere walking distance from where he was staying.

It is a pleasant surprise therefore to find that Rizal had also actually traipsed from there to London’s more distant but less affluent East End to continue his work with Filipinos. He apparently set up a Filipino young men’s club in the Dalton area near Hackney to ensure that his kababayans of that time were always conscious of national issues. Rizal should probably also be given the title of ‘Father of Filipino Community Organizations in Britain’. A lot of Filipinos nowadays own houses in London’s East End where prices are generally cheaper, but I do not think many of them realize that the hero was active in their community a hundred years ago.

I wish I had a copy of the second volume (1888-onwards) of Epistolario Rizalino which the Biblioteca Nacional de Filipinas published in 1930. It ought to have details of Rizal’s community organization work in London. It would be fascinating to see which Filipinos were here then, what they did, what they talked about and possibly where they met regularly. Maybe the Filipino community can discover another historical site in London. But this time, maybe the government or some rich Filipino benefactor could purchase the property and turn it into a Philippine center or museum.

The Filipino community continually seeks role models for their children born or growing up in Britain. The Philippines however is strangely bereft of credible modern heroes who could be turned into icons of role model proportions, and whatever Filipino breakthroughs are made to date in Britain relate usually to the theatrical stage. So looking back to the heroes of a century ago, with their imperfections and individual tragedies, is a safer bet. For theirs at least are monumental achievements with which it is less difficult to identify. However, one cannot simply identify with these heroes in scholarly books or in newspaper articles. What they need is a place to go to where they could see visually what these heroes looked like and what sort of things they did when they were here for the country. One solution is to have a house devoted to Filipino heroes who lived in London.

The Chalcot Crescent house is apparently owned by an American lawyer who rents out the property to visiting Americans. Apart from the Philippine Ambassador, his wife and embassy staff and the Knights of Rizal who every June 19 pay tribute to Rizal with a floral offering at the house, I know of nobody else who was ever let into the house to feast his or her eyes upon whatever historical artefact remains inside, particularly the two rooms Rizal occupied as bedroom and receiving room. This is a tragedy for the Filipino community, and a shame indeed for the Filipino nation. How could the nation allow such a historically valuable property slip through its hands? Its non-Filipino tenants probably cannot even begin to appreciate how much this landmark means for Filipinos around the world.

This property (and the Dalton one, if it ever gets discovered) ought to become more than just a site to pose at for souvenir photographs. I would like to see it as a testament to Anglo-Filipino relations, to the ties that bind both countries to each other in the spirit of friendship, trade, cultural and even political cooperation. That is my fervent hope for Filipinos in Britain who have long been in need of an enduring place to meet with pride. A place where people can bring their families and friends. A place which can showcase the best of Filipinos, old and even new. A piece of England forever Philippine.
